Tire pressure control systems from Continental

The most frequent case of a flat is a loss of inflation pressure so gradual as to go unnoticed by the driver until it's too late. With ITS, TPMS and DDS, we offer different systems for alerting a driver early on to a loss of tire inflation pressure.

Intelligent Tire System

The Intelligent Tire System measures inflation pressure directly. It consists of a central receiver and four non-battery-operated tire modules. The modules measure the actual inflation pressure in a tire, taking into account the temperature of the tire. This information is transmitted wirelessly to the receiver module. Our tire modules are not fastened to the rim, as is usually the case. For optimum protection from damage – e.g. during tire mounting – they are, instead, firmly attached to the tire itself.

The Intelligent Tire System enables our tires to communicate with the vehicle electronics. Drivers are thus supplied, directly in the cockpit, with a constant flow of information on all the tires. Beside info on pressure and temperature, our tire modules can also transmit additional data on vehicle electronics. In this way they favorably influence handling features and ride comfort.

Int. Tire Syst.: The non-battery-operated tire modules communicate directly with the vehicle electronics (trigger optional). The temperature and inflation pressure of the tires is shown on a display.

TPMS: Tire Pressure Monitoring System

TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) measures inflation pressure directly. It consists of a central receiver (e.g. remote keyless entry) and four rim modules. The modules measure the current tire pressure, taking into account the temperature of the tire. The tire position is determined automatically with the help of the electronic brake system (EBS). An instrument panel display alerts the driver to an excessive drop in tire inflation pressure.

Integration in EBS also makes possible other useful functions – without requiring any extra sensors. These functions include load-dependent alert thresholds and a supplementary DDS backup option.

TPMS: The signals from the rim modules are picked up by an electronic control unit (ECU). A signal lamp on the instrument panel alerts the driver to an excessive drop in tire inflation pressure.

DDS: Deflation Detection System

The Deflation Detection System measures tire inflation pressure indirectly and alerts the driver immediately in the event that inflation pressure drops below a defined threshold. The Continental Deflation Detection System is a 100% software solution that evaluates the data from the ABS wheel speed sensor. It gets by without any sensor system of its own. Any loss of pressure changes the radius of the tire and results in a specific electronically detectable alteration in the speed signal. The system alerts the driver in the event that tire inflation pressure drops below a specified limit value. Many vehicles with Continental runflat tires are already equipped with DDS.
