The world’s most comprehensive winter tire test brought together 53 models of 225/45 R 17 tires to be assessed by the experts from AutoBild. And best in test was the Continental WinterContact TS 860, which was awarded the top “exemplary” rating (issue 39/19). The journalists tested winter tires from a variety of international brands in a total of 16 categories. Tests were conducted on snow, as well as on wet and dry asphalt, with a BMW 1-series model as the test vehicle. “The winning tire impressed with the best handling properties in all weathers. It delivers a direct steering response, stable lateral guidance, good economy, high mileage and low rolling resistance,” concluded the testers.
The 53 winter tires in the test line-up also included products from Continental’s Semperit and Uniroyal brands. Described as “an impressive all-rounder with good winter properties” the Semperit Speed-Grip 3 emerged from the test with a “good” rating. The MS plus 77 from rain tire brand Uniroyal was also rated “good”. Summing up its performance, the AutoBild testers wrote: “The winter tread pattern offers stable handling properties in all weathers, good lateral guidance and low rolling resistance.”
