In the latest comparative winter tire test conducted by automobile clubs ADAC, ÖAMTC and TCS from Germany, Austria and Switzerland respectively, Continental winter tires emerged victorious in both sizes tested. Commenting on the WinterContact TS 860 in size 175/65 R 14 the experts said: “This is a very balanced winter tire with top marks in the wet and on snow and good performance on dry roads,” while for the same model in size 205/55 R 16 the verdict was: “A very balanced tire with top marks in the wet and for fuel consumption; particularly good on snow.” Tires in the sizes tested are suitable for a wide range of passenger cars from compact to mid-range models. The test vehicles in this case were a VW Golf VII and a Ford Fiesta. The experts from the automobile clubs tested 28 different models of winter tire from European, American and Asian brands in a total of 17 categories. The winning tires from Continental scored an average mark of 2.1 for the smaller size and 2.2 for the larger dimension.
The testers were less satisfied with two tires from Asian manufacturers. On account of poor performance on wet roads, these had to settle for “inadequate” ratings.
The WinterContact TS 860 is a winter specialist for more compact and smaller vehicles. The tire is currently available in 66 sizes for 13 to 17-inch rims and with approvals for speeds of up to 240 km/h – including numerous versions with XL marking indicating higher load capacity and/or a rim protection rib.
