Here we distinguish between two different application formats/media: Print media or media for advertising and exhibition purposes usually require high-resolution and scalable file formats. Media that we typically use for internal purposes such as Office (PowerPoint), or for online/intranet purposes, require low-resolution file formats.
File formats for high-resolution media: All EPS and AI formats are used here. Both are what are called vector graphics, i.e. all fonts are changed into vector paths. Both formats are used for high-resolution graphics and as a rule are required by external service to create all types of publications.
JPG and PNG file formats are used for low-resolution applications/media. The JPG format is a pixel file that should never be used larger than 100% since the quality becomes proportionally worse as the image size is increased. JPG formats have a defined background that cannot be changed, so its use is restricted (for instance in the case of logos). In contrast, the PNG file is stored without a background and can thus be used on various backgrounds.
For a full list of acceptable and prohibited use of logos, colors, and brand elements, please refer to the "Continental Basic Elements" style guide linked above.
