Design & Sourcing
Tires may look simple – round, black and are made of rubber: But take a closer look and you will discover a highly engineered product. The design and interaction of the many materials involved are incredibly complex.
At Continental, our material experts and tire engineers have been leading a silent revolution for some time now. Our ambition is clear: we are continuously increasing the share of renewable and recycled materials in our tires.
This progress is driven by for example:
- Synthetic rubber obtained from renewable or circular oil
- Polyester made from recycled PET bottles
- recycled steel
- innovative fillers, such as silica from rice husk ash
While the share of renewable and recycled production materials in our tires averaged 26 percent in 2024, we expect this figure to reach at least 40 percent by 2030 — without compromising on safety or performance.
To achieve this, we continually analyze and review all raw materials used in our tire production, always striving to conserve valuable resources.
Further information can be found in the Resource Use and Circular Economy section of our annual sustainability report 2024.
