If you were to look at tire track markings left in dirt, the distinctive patterns may remind you of a shoe print. And, just like comparing the prints left by winter boots and summer shoes, you can work out which are snow tires, and which are summer tires. Along with other tire features, the unique patterns designed for winter tires influence your vehicle’s traction, grip and brake performance – especially on ice, wet surfaces and in snow.

In this article, we’ll investigate why tire patterns are so distinct and why tread is especially important for winter tires.


The anatomy of a winter tire

In harsh winter conditions, a tire’s tread pattern enhances a vehicle’s grip and handling on icy roads. It is formed from four main divisions:

  • Tread blocks – the foundation of grip

Tread blocks are raised rubber sections that have direct contact with the road and which eventually wear down over time.

  • Sipes – the secret to ice traction

Sipes are very thin slots cut into the tread block. They provide extra traction in wet weather, snow and ice.

  • Deep grooves – channeling slush and water

Grooves, continuous ruts that run around the circumference of the tire to effectively channel away water, are deeper in winter tires to help reduce the risks of aquaplaning and generally create more traction.

  • The rubber compound – staying flexible in the cold

Ribs are the raised rubber sections that run around the circumference of the tire to help improve steering in snow, on ice-covered surfaces and wet roads. 




Five elements that make a difference

While these four main divisions help form a tire’s pattern, there’s a fifth element that makes all the difference for winter tires – the tire compound. Winter and all-season tires are made from specially formulated natural rubber compounds that are softer and more flexible than compounds used in summer tires. That way, they’re able to offer much better grip and traction in lower temperatures. The winter tire tread design offers its benefits especially on roads covered with snow or ice. The snow gets pressed into the wider and deeper tread grooves, utilizing the effect of shear forces on snow for additional grip. The wider grooves can also absorb more slush than summer tires and ensure more contact with the road surface.

Why is the tread depth of winter tires different from summer tires?

As mentioned above, winter tire patterns have larger, deeper grooves and additional thin channels known as sipes. This combination allows greater brake control, traction and safety when driving in snow or on icy and muddy road surfaces. Additionally, when snow gets compacted into the deep grooves, this helps create further traction. 

Understanding tread depth on winter tires

The performance of an all-season or winter tire depends largely on the tread depth. As tire tread wears down over time, its ability to maintain grip on icy roads decreases. To ensure optimum driving performance and more importantly driving safety, your tires should always have sufficient tread. Always consider the legal regulations of your country and take into account that tire performance decreases with tread depth, especially in winter conditions.

Tread depth on new winter tires

  • Standard depth for new tires: Most brand-new winter tires typically feature a tread depth of approx. 8 to 9.5 mm (10/32" to 12/32"), which is significantly deeper than the tread found on standard summer or high-performance tires.
  • The "snow-on-snow" principle: This increased tread depth on winter tires is intentionally designed to pack and hold snow within the grooves. Since snow sticks to itself better than rubber sticks to ice, this "snow-on-snow" contact provides the necessary traction to move forward.
  • Capacity for slush evacuation: The deeper tread pattern acts as a high-capacity drainage system, allowing the tire to remove large volumes of water and heavy slush to maintain constant contact with the road surface and prevent hydroplaning.

Specialized compounds: Unlike all-season rubber that hardens in the cold, winter tires stay flexible in sub-zero temperatures to maintain grip.

Enhanced traction: Winter treads feature a high sipe density and aggressive grooves to bite into ice and eject slush more effectively than all-season designs.

How to check your tread depth

You should aim to inspect your tire tread depth at least every two weeks, along with your tire pressure. Regular checks ensure the tread on your winter tires is ready for winter safety. You can accurately check your tires using these common methods:

  • Using a professional tread depth gauge:

Use a tread depth gauge, inserting the probe into the groove and pushing the shoulders down to the surface of the tire. Do this across several sections of the tire and ensure the tread depth meets the legal requirements in the country you are driving in. If it's below this measurement, it's time for new winter tires. In a pinch, you can also use a small ruler to check the tread.

  • Reading your tread wear indicators (wear bars):

Check your tread wear indicators, sometimes referred to as wear bars. All tires are manufactured with a series of small rubber bars embedded in a section of the tire grooves. Once the tread is worn down, these bars are flush with the level of the tread pattern. This means the tire has reached its limit of winter suitability and it is now time for new tires. Note: You may need to rotate your tire a few times to find the wear bars.  

  • Checking the tread depth with a coin (US):

If you don't have a gauge at hand, common coins provide a quick diagnostic. While not a millimeter-precise measurement, they are excellent for a "pass/fail" safety check. Insert a penny upside down – if you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, you are at the legal limit of 1.6 mm (2/32"). 

Maintenance and safety: beyond the tread

When checking your winter tire tread, look for any damage such as unusual bulges, small scoops and divots in the tire. They could indicate that your tires are misaligned or that there may be other problems with your vehicle. If you do find any damage, visit your local tire specialist as soon as possible for a thorough check. You should also check the conditions of your winter tires when you prepare your vehicle for the cold season.

Identifying damage: bulges, cupping, and divots

  • Bulges and bubbles: Look for unusual lumps on the sidewall or tread. These often signal internal structural damage from potholes, which can lead to a sudden blowout.
  • Cupping and scoops: Small, "scooped-out" divots in the tread usually indicate worn suspension or unbalanced wheels, which causes an uneven reduction of the tread depth on your winter tires.
  • Uneven wear: If one side of the tread wears faster than the other, your vehicle is likely misaligned. This can make steering unpredictable on slippery, snow-covered roads.
  • Pre-season check: Always inspect your tires for deep cracks or embedded objects when preparing for winter. If you find any damage, visit a tire specialist immediately to ensure your tires are safe for the season.

New winter tires typically have a tread depth of 8 to 9.5 mm (10/32" to 12/32"). The legal minimum limit in most parts of the world is 1.6 mm (2/32”) and 3mm for winter tires.

Yes. Some winter tires have a directional (V-shaped) pattern designed to rotate in one specific way to effectively channel slush and water away. If installed backwards, the tire cannot clear debris properly, significantly increasing your risk of hydroplaning and reducing traction. Always check for the rotation arrow on the sidewall to ensure that they are mounted correctly.

On average, winter tires last between three to five seasons (up to five years), or about 40.000 km (20.000 to 40.000 miles). Their lifespan depends on the rubber compound, your driving habits, and whether you change the tires promptly when the temperatures rise.

Winter tires wear out faster in warmer temperatures. They are made from a specialized soft rubber compound designed to stay flexible in freezing temperatures. When driven on warm, dry pavement, this soft rubber creates more friction and heat, causing the tread to wear down much faster than a summer or all-season tire. Winter tires that are used during summer temperatures have significantly less grip than summer tires.

Yes. While AWD helps with acceleration and getting moving in snow, it does not help with braking or cornering. The specialized tread and sipes of a winter tire are what provide the grip needed to stop and turn on ice, regardless of your vehicle’s drivetrain.
